Dance Gavin Dance

Acceptance Speech (2013)
Torrent

Dance Gavin Dance has been through a multitude of line up changes and now they are back with a new clean vocalist (but don't worry Jon Mess is still on board, and still crazy). This album sticks true to the DGD genre, fun and heavy riffs, pulsating drums, catchy vocals and the insanity that is Jon Mess. The new vocalist certainly takes the cake for having the highest voice out of their past line ups, but I have learned to actually really enjoy it. Dance Gavin Dance just has such great lyrical flow you almost have to sing along if you know the words. My favorite song has got to be "Carve", especially the breakdown with the lyrics:

"That's my trope, and my sleight of hand
I'm about to predict the future
Any credit given will be swept under the rug
Or reduced to the fine print
I'm only silent when you're asking questions
The simple answer is "no I wasn't present""

But honestly every single song on this album is worth listening to and has its moment of "wow."

Town Portal

Chronopoly (2012)
Bandcamp

Math metal from the earliest stages of the Earth. Beauty amongst molten rock, shifting plates, and violent storms. This Copenhagen instrumental band chose to title their album Chronopoly. I would have to agree that it does quite dominate all of the chron. Heavy, melodic, progressive, math metal, GET IT.

Hail the Sun

Elephantitis (2012)
Bandcamp

A strange mixture of Dance Gavin Dance style guitars, Circa Survive/HRVRD style singing, and post-hardcore drumming. The vocals are great, my only complaint is that the lyrical content could have been a bit better, but the instrumentals are spot on.

Wot Gorilla?

Kebnekaise (2012)
Bandcamp

After a quick Google search I found that Kebnekaise is the name of the highest mountain in Sweden. Now that we got that little fact out of the way, Wot Gorilla? released their first full length album a matter of days ago. I am really excited to listen to this album after being thoroughly impressed by the earlier EP's. Wot Gorilla? is just one of those bands that really stand out as their own genre. The lead singer's voice is the perfect compliment to the complex use of tapping, time signature changes, and melodic breakdowns that seem to put a weight on your chest. This album really stands out on first listen and I'm sure this will soon grow to become one of my favorites.

Oh and hey Wot, nice job with the screams.

And it's here, Circa Survive announces their fourth full length album will be released August 28th and a fall tour will follow. The first single entitled "Suitcase" is available for free on their official page. I have watched this band grow and am amazed at their persistent hard work, and they do it all for the fan. I'm proud to call myself a Circa fan and can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

The band that has inspired countless talented artists of the 21st century is now BACK after an 11 year hiatus. At the Drive-In has announced their return and have announced two shows that they will be playing in the Spring. Sounds highly likely that the band will also write some new material, but nothing is official yet. The band tweeted that, "This Station Is Now Operational", so keep up with the band's news if you're a fan of this band! In celebration, here are the band's albums and the Vaya EP.

Cursive

The Ugly Organ (2003)
Mediafire

This album takes me back to middle school, I just gave it a full listen and was reminded of just how awesome it is. Great indie rock post hardcore band from Nebraska. Beautifully heavy melodies, wildly unique vocals, and the additional use of instruments such as organs, violins, and cello.

Beyond talented, The Mars Volta is a widely respected progressive metal band pulling influences from jazz, funk, latin, and psychedelic. The sound is unparalleled and a superior image to the genre. You have probably heard of them but if not I highly suggest checking this band out. De-Loused in the Comatorium is a great album to start with and is widely accepted as their most influential work.  Omar A. Rodriquez-Lopez is the man behind the guitar, and Cedric Bixler Zavala sings out with one of the greatest voices on the planet, not too mention a vocabulary that creates lyrics that force you to open up a dictionary for a hint of understanding.
