The Exploration

Demography (2013)
Bandcamp

There's something I really like about this, maybe it's the slow steady progression and the tapping, or maybe it's the washed out vocals. More likely that it's both though, and hey, they're from Grand Rapids. I'm definitely going to take some inspiration from the guitar parts.

The Bulletproof Tiger

Stab the New Cherry EP (2009)
Download
Bandcamp

The first release by, in my opinion, one of the greatest math rock bands to come into the scene. Incredible music that will never let you down for even a moment's rest. You should definitely listen to their newest release, You Wanna Kiss About It? I thought I had posted about them a long time ago but looking back I see that I have not!

This Town Needs Guns

13.0.0.0.0 (2013)
Bandcamp

The well renowned  math rock band from Oxford, England plan to release their newest album on January 22nd, 2013. Anticipation for the album within the math rock community is at an all time high. Two songs are available to listen to right now, but the rest are still a mystery. This Town Needs Gun's previous vocalist really gave the band their unique sound, and many fans were concerned when he left the band at the end of their last EP. With the release of the new album's two songs, entitled "Cat Fantastic"  and "Left Aligned", most of the concern has ceased, and the newest member and vocalist to the band, Henry Tremain, is being welcomed with open arms. His voice and style fits right along with TTNG's classic feeling. This new album is currently my most anticipated of 2013.

Eleanor Quigley

The Captain Chair (2012)
Soundcloud

Eleanor Quigley is a local East Lansing, MI two piece band. Both of the band members are good friends of mine so if you would take a look at their new EP and show them some love that would be awesome. Mostly math rock with a couple of metal/grindcore tracks at the end.

Pastoral

Pastoral (2012)
Bandcamp

Finally some piece of mind, math influence without so much misleading chaos. Lots of acoustic fingerstyle picking. Posting this early in the morning and it's pretty hot out. I think I may have to soak in some sun and some smoke while listening to this album.

Bandcamp

You'll never know what's coming next with this band, completely unpredictable. This is why I love math rock. Weye pulls lots of inspiration from  Piglet and Pelican. Free download at their bandcamp page.

The band that has inspired countless talented artists of the 21st century is now BACK after an 11 year hiatus. At the Drive-In has announced their return and have announced two shows that they will be playing in the Spring. Sounds highly likely that the band will also write some new material, but nothing is official yet. The band tweeted that, "This Station Is Now Operational", so keep up with the band's news if you're a fan of this band! In celebration, here are the band's albums and the Vaya EP.

Tangled Hair

First (2010)
Mediafire

Featuring the former members of the band Colour, I am happy to hear a similar sound. Alan Welsh voice certainly adds a finishing touch to the rhythmic patterns and riffs known to the math rock genre.
