Rooftops - A Forest of Polarity

A Forest of Polarity (2009)
Mediafire

Beautiful math rock, similar to that of Antlers and Battles. They name their songs in a pretty cool way too, the intro is "Fiery Atlas" and all the songs following are a phrase made using just the letters from fiery atlas. Although names have nothing to do with the band's talent...Rooftops delivers right off the bat, with my favorite "Astray Life."  Get it!

Antlers

Self-Titled (2007)
  Mediafire

Enjoy this tree themed album of straight up math rock, there are vocals but they are extremely sparse. "Bald Cypress" is a groovy tune, check it out.   This band is NOT to be confused with The Antlers, a popular indie rock band, butttt Antlers are better.

Shigeto - Full Circle

Full Circle (2010)
Fileserve

Another one man Electronic/IDM/Glitch project fronted by Zach Saginaw (under the pseudonym Shigeto, among others). The man is from my own home state here in Michigan, and often finds influence from his experiences growing up here. He currently is writing sick beats in Brooklyn, NY.
Very original, very creative, looking forward to getting to know this guys work better and I anticipate future releases. Strongly recommend this download.

Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner

Lucky Shiner (2010)

One man IDM, Chillwave, Glitch-Hop band from the United Kingdom. Very suitable background music. This is Gold Panda's most recent full release.

Braids- Native Speaker

Native Speaker (2011)

Mediafire

Recently came across this band and what caught my attention the most was certainly the vocals. The singer has one hell of a voice and a unique singing style. The music itself is similar to that of Animal Collective, so some will love it while others will hate it.  The band is from Canada and they have been together since 2006.

Genres: Neo-Psychedelia, Experimental, Indie Pop

I first heard LP3 while I was lightin' up and I just knew that I would be listening to it a lot from that point on. The music has a very serene and majestic feel to it, you can just sit back, take a break, and let the album roll. The band consist of just two men from New York City, one playing guitar while the other bust out gnarly beats on the synth.  Classics and the Self-Titled album are very much worth checking out as well, the band keeps its sound but keeps it original as well. Enjoy =)

So So Modern

Crude Futures (2010)
Mediafire

Straight from their Last.fm bio, "Hello! Nice to meet you. We are are a four-person collective interested in creating a more fun and meaningful future through performance and music. By performance we mean the reciprocal acts of seeing and being seen, and by music we mean the ability to show solidarity around creative aural pleasure. Remember the campfire? Hope you do, cos thats what music means to us. A platform for sharing ideas, stories and gathering. But also a stage for challenges, dialog and what not."

Awesome, melodic math rock with a twist. So So Modern just has their own unique sound you gotta here to understand. If you get the album check out "Dendrons," "Berlin," and "Holiday."
By the way these guys are from either New Zealand or Australia, can't remember but they're basically the same anyways.

Anthony Green - Avalon

Anthony Green is the type of musician who is constantly working on multiple projects. Sometime between the release of Circa Survive's On Letting Go and Blue Sky Noise, Anthony hit the studio and recorded a number of solo songs. Some of the songs were created years ago by Anthony, but he never released them on an album. Some of the songs are new, recorded just for this album alone. Most of the songs are acoustic in nature but there are electric pulses throughout the album. Anthony Green had help recording and touring for the album by the band Good Old War, who is another favorite of mine. Good Old War add their "folky" touch to Anthony Green's beautiful voice and the final product is none other than Avalon.

Anthony Green began recording his second solo album "Beautiful Things" December 11th, 2010.  I can't wait till its released and will try to get it up here when it does.

Giraffes? Giraffes! is a two person math-rock/experimental band from Massachusetts. Anybody interested in math-rock that pushes the boundaries and creates sometimes wild and far out music should check out this band. The band has many psychedelic elements and almost certainly trip balls. Check out the song "I Am S/H(im)e[r] As You Am S/H(im)e[r] As You Are Me And We Am I And I Are All Our Together: Our Collective Consciousness’ Psycogenic Fugue" off of More Skin With Milk Mouth.

Dance Gavin Dance

Downtown Battle Mountain 2 (2011)
Mediafire

The highly anticipated sequel to DGD's first album with the original lineup. The creativity in this album is astronomical, I cannot wait to see them perform live. The riffs are full of this driving force that continues through the whole album. Jon Mess's raspy scream and strange lyrics go hand in hand with Johnny Craig's harmonies. "I got acid that I gargle for a fresh brain stump!"  I would highly suggest this album, as well as the original Downtown Battle Mountain from 2007.
I believe the mediafire link has the two bonus tracks as well.

Bit of a lineup change on this album compared to the Downtown Battle Mountains, still worth a listen though. Check it out.  "Holy Fuck I'm Impressed!"

Self-Titled (2009)

  Gangs (2011)

Password: Natayada

This band hails from Northern, Ireland, so you know its good. But really, the group is an extremely talented completely original band with a highly creative sound. It's bands like these that push the envelope of sound and create something new. The band really brings in a lot of energy and emotion into their music. No singer, obvious metal influences scattered amongst mathy riffs and post-rock harmonies. The self titled album is off the hook, check out "Clench Fist, Grit Teeth...Go!" and "Set Guitars to Kill".  Not that they aren't all good but these are some great stand alone singles. Enjoy!

Quiet Mouth, Loud Hands (2008)

I first discovered Damiera listening to Quiet Mouth, Loud Hands and quickly had to find their previous album M(US)IC.  I just had to hear more, this band got a lot of listening from me. The driving guitars and vocals make for some groovy bang your head tunes. The band is from Buffalo and have come a long way since their formation.  Pop vocals, deep lyrics, gnarly riffs dude.

Stray From the Path

 Villains (2008)

 Make Your Own History (2009)

 Rising Sun (2011)

Recently saw SFTP at the 2011 Bledfest and before then I had never heard of them before. They were the only band (that I didn't know at all) to really grab my attention. The played a wildly energetic show and raised the bar for the rest of the night's bands. After the show I went home and found Make Your Own History to be a promising album. It's tough to find original metalcore these days, many bands seem to just go through the motions. SFTP has a number of very memorable moments that caught my ear on first listen. Some moments may blend together as typical metalcore, but it is always built back up into something awesome. Plus the dudes got a unique sing/scream combo that adds the finishing touch to the album, making it sing-a-long worthy. Fast paced, brutal, metalcore.

Awesome indie math rock band from Chicago. Tree, Swallows, Houses is definitely one of my favorite albums, the guitars and bass rise and fall with each other in beautiful harmony while Dave Davison's unique voice and singing style add the perfect folky touch to the band.

It is truly mind blowing how every action we make and every thought we have affects all of space and time.

Ghosts and Vodka

Precious Blood (2001)
Mediafire

Ghosts and Vodka are a math/post-rock from Chicago, Illinois. They formed in 1998, but took a long hiatus from 2001-2009. In 2009, the future looked promising for the band, as they were practicing together again, but just a few months later and the band called it quits once again. Who knows if they'll continue writing music but at least we have the pleasure of letting this album hit our ears.

Circa Survive

Gotta get this band up here, these are some of my favorite albums, been listening since middle school. I'll keep it short cause I could go on forever. Every member of the band is crucial and adds its own beautiful sound to create some amazing tunes. I highly suggest seeing this band live, Anthony Green has so much energy that it just explodes into the crowd. This is the band's full discography, but there are a number of singles I didn't feel like finding.

Chon

Honestly, everyone in the world needs to listen to this band at least once.  Their 2008 Demos lasts around 11 minutes but it'll take you on a wild ride. The band is from San Diego, California. Obviously growing up here gives one a little advantage at being a better musician. The drummer of this band was only eleven when it was recorded...while the guitarists were only 15/16.
When it comes down to it, you just gotta hear it for yourself. Amazing progressive metal band that after taking a few years off to work on other projects, is now currently reuniting and playing shows across the West Coast. Nothing would please me more than a full length album sometime in the future and a US tour.

Share this with your prog friends- Demos 2008

Also here's two of they're newest songs, they just threw up on myspace a couple months ago:

Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

An elite band of the post-rock genre, Explosions in the Sky released their fifth full length album this year. While the ratings for the album don't exceed those of their previous albums, it does not disappoint. The band sticks true to their sound. While some complain that there was little innovation on this new album, the band has found its niche in the post-rock genre and will continue to stay there. They continue to produce quality music despite the lack of appreciation from the mainstream. Always great for late night relaxing/background noise. The band is going on a headline tour late summer/fall of 2011.

Japandi - The Great Dinosaur Mystery

The Great Dinosaur Mystery (2007)

 Decorative Duck (2010)

A friend of mine recently shared this album with me, so I'm here sharing it with you. Japandi is an instrumental, progressive post-rock band that formed in 2004. They came about after supporting members of Brian Warren's band, Weatherbox, left the band. The supporting members of Weatherbox formed Japandi, and in 2007 "The Great Dinosaur Mystery" was released. Decorative Duck is Japandi's most recent EP release.

Anthony Green Recent Interview

For any Anthony Green fans out there, check out this interview from Niagra Music Scene. Anthony shares his plans for the future, including his upcoming release of his second solo album, "Beautiful Things" which is scheduled to release sometime in 2011. He goes on to talk about the next Circa album, which may take a couple years to bring together, but sounds hopeful for a Sound of Animals Fighting reunion, which is what really excites me. RX Bandits drummer, Chris Tsagakis, has compiled some material with the bassist of the Mars Volta (Hell Yea!), Juan Alderete, and has sent it to Anthony for further development. Anthony talks about how he would love to do an East Coast tour with TSOAF, but if things change heavily, they may start a whole new project under a different name. Time will tell, but get excited.

 We Delete; Erase EP

I'm all about unique voices and after my first few listens I was hooked. I would put this band in my top favorites. I also saw them live at Bledfest 2011 and they just played an amazing show.  The album "Wrestling Moves" has gained the band a good amount of attention and I am looking forward to a hopeful second album release. The screeching vocals of lead singer Bobby Markos may at first throw one off, but give it a few listens and it could grow on you like it did on me. His lyrics show his true intelligence and not one song lacks a message.  Check out the EP as well.

Welcome, Ghosts
